This eight tune lever wound musical box is believed to have been purchased around 1860 from the M.J. Paillard & Co. retail store at 21 Maiden Lane in New York City.
An instruction sticker on the underside of the box says:
TO WIND UP, use Lever marked No. 1
TO START, push backwards No. 2
TO STOP AT THE END OF THE TUNE, pull No. 2
TO CHANGE THE TUNE, push back No. 3
TO REPEAT THE SAME TUNE, push forward No. 3 while the tune you wish repeated is playing
